Advent 2012

The season of Advent is a 4-week time of preparation for Christmas and expectation for the arrival of Jesus Christ. As part of our worship service on November 25, we did a Hanging of the Greens in which we brought in greenery (a reminder of God’s never-failing love) to the sanctuary and changed the paraments to purple, the color of royalty and preparation.

This year during Advent, we will be using some of the themes from Adam Hamilton’s The Journey during worship and Sunday School. Some of our standing classes will be using this study, and Carol and I will also be leading a class in Rooms 109/110 for folks who are not already part of a class or whose class is not using the study. We will spend some time considering the characters of Mary and Joseph and the journeys they take toward the birth of their son Jesus.

During worship, we will have special Children’s Messages where we join together in the journeys of Mary and Joseph. We will also light the Advent Wreath each week and have other symbols and art to remind us of the holiness of this season. We hope you will join us on Sunday mornings and at other times as we worship together during Advent and Christmas:

  • December 2 – First Sunday of Advent (8:30 and 11:00)
  • December 9 – Second Sunday of Advent (8:30 and 11:00)
  • December 16 – Third Sunday of Advent (8:30 and 11:00)
  • December 19 – Service of the Longest Night  (7:00 pm) – a service of hope and comfort for those who find the holiday season difficult
  • December 23 – Fourth Sunday of Advent (Service of Lessons and Carols at 8:30 and 11:00; brunch and carols at 9:45 in the Fellowship Hall/Small Sanctuary)
