Leadership

I know it’s 90 degrees outside and the swimming pools are still open, but at Christ UMC we are heading full-speed ahead into Fall. The youth and the BANANA Club had their kick-off events on Sunday night; Wednesday Night Together starts up this week; the Finance Committee is already putting together the budget and the plans for our fall giving campaign; Disciple Bible Study class is gearing up; people are signing up for Fall Dinner Groups; and we’re just a few weeks away from the All-Church Retreat.

One of the ministries that comes with the beginning of the Fall is the Lay Leadership Team. This group gets busy around this time of year, and the bulk of our work gets done by mid-November, when the church holds our annual Charge Conference. Our hope is to bring to that Charge Conference (scheduled this year for Wednesday, November 14), a slate of the 2013 leaders for our congregation.

As we go about our work over the next weeks and months, the Lay Leadership Team will be in a spirit of prayerful discernment. We will be seeking God’s guidance to determine whom God might be calling to serve among us in various leadership roles. I want to tell you about some of the ministries we’ll be considering and invite you to consider whether God might be calling you to serve.

STAFF-PARISH COMMITTEE: This committee works as a liaison between the staff and the congregation. They provide support and encouragement to the staff, and they listen to feedback from the congregation as a way of helping us all grow. They also determine staff salaries and policies. We’ll be seeking three people to serve on this committee.

The TRUSTEES oversee the care of the building and grounds, but they do much more than that. They are the “keepers” of the church, making sure we are insured and are complying with legal and policy requirements. Our building is part of our ministry, and I’m grateful for the time and faith that our Trustees put into keeping our doors open for ministry in the community.

The ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL, which meets four times a year, is the overall governing body of the congregation.  This group gets to hear from all ministry areas and helps to guide the overall vision of our ministry together. We’ll be looking for three new at-large members as well as someone to serve as Vice-Chair for two years before becoming Chair.

The LAY LEADERSHIP TEAM takes on three new members each year. Our work is to “equip and deploy” people to serve in the church. It’s exciting work, but we need your help! If you feel God calling you to serve in any of these leadership roles, please let us know. Email me at carol@christum.net, or give me a call.
