“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth….” So begins our Bible, thus establishing God as Creator. And we who are created in God’s image act out the God within us when we participate in creation and creativity. Every culture in history has expressed its deepest essence through creative arts – poetry, painting, sculpture, pottery, and perhaps most significantly, music.
Why is music such a powerful means of expressing the most significant truths about God? Perhaps it is because music and words together make such an indelible impression on our minds and souls. We may not remember what a former Sunday school teacher taught us, but we can remember the words to “Jesus Loves Me.” And in times when we need the strength these words can bring us, they come to mind much more readily because they have been set to a tune we can remember and have sung for years.
It is a joy to experience beautiful music presented by gifted musicians, and we have such people in our congregation. However, it is an even higher joy to participate in some way in the creation of such beauty. Which is why I would ask you to consider prayerfully the following:
- Join the Celebration Singers. You don’t have to be a fantastic singer or be able to read music (although if you fit into either of these categories, I’d really love you to consider this!). You just have to love music and want to sing with a fun, spiritual, talented group to lead our congregation in worship. Rehearsals are from 6:30 until 8:00 on Wednesday evenings.
- If you enjoy singing and prefer the 8:30 service, consider becoming a part of the Rock of Ages ensemble. They sing for worship on the first, third, and fifth Sundays. They rehearse on Thursday evenings before the Sundays they lead worship.
- If your children or youth are musical, encourage them to participate in the choir for their age group. Our children’s choirs are making some changes that we hope will encourage more to participate and enhance our programs. Their choirs will begin meeting on Wednesday, September 5, from 6:30 to 7:15. Our Joyful Noise Youth Choir just completed our annual kickoff retreat with 35 youth participating. They rehearse on Sunday afternoons from 4:30 to 5:30 and sing for worship on the second Sunday of the month. In June they go on a 5 day mission-focused tour. This year our tour is June 19-23, 2013. Rumor has it we may go to LA (lower Alabama).
- Pray and participate. Our church is growing. Our music program needs to grow and expand to continue to help people experience God’s presence thought the act of creating music. What kinds of new musical experiences do we need to offer? How can we expand existing groups to better fulfill our mission? We are holding a meeting to discuss the music program in our congregation on September 9 following the late service in the common area. If you are interested in participating in such a meeting, you are cordially invited to attend. Please RSVP to me if you plan to be there so we can have enough lunch available. If you would like to offer your suggestions but cannot come to the meeting, feel free to send them to me at the same email.
The ancient Israelites has a tribe set apart for leading the music and worship in the temple. We have gifted, willing people who want to be part of God’s creative work in our congregation through the music. Join us, and see what beauty and truth God can create in us and through us.
