We Are About Relationships
Rachel Phillips may be just a junior in high school, but her connection to Christ UMC runs deep. Her parents, Becky, a kindergarten teacher at Trinity Elementary, and Richard, who runs his own business as a traffic engineer, started going to Christ UMC before she was even born, and she’s been here ever since. Family, including her younger sister, is really important to Rachel, and they love to spend time together. The women of the family do scrapbooking and crafting together, and Rachel and her dad like to watch sports. Rachel also loves playing lacrosse and doing outdoor activities like bike riding, camping, kayaking, and hiking.
Like many other girls her age, she likes to hang out with friends, particularly the friends that she’s made at Christ UMC. She also loves spending time with the children of Christ UMC. And speaking of Rachel’s involvements here at Christ UMC, she loves being part of the Orbit youth group and serving the community and the hurting world through Orbit activities. For her, service activities have been some of the most meaningful times in Orbit. Rachel says, “For example, every week year-round, a group of about six youth and the youth ministers go to Nashville to volunteer by helping kids with their homework. We also did a wonderful 30-hour famine to raise money and awareness to fight world hunger. Last summer, I went on a mission trip with our youth group to Harlan County, Kentucky! It was such a meaningful experience, and I had the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and serve people that were hurting very much. I will carry all of our mission experiences with me throughout my entire life, and I believe that they have had a very positive influence on my faith.”

I was baptized in the “old sanctuary.” Now that seems like such a small area, but up on that stage I was baptized by my Papa (Glen Phillips) and Rev. Bill Miller. It’s great to be able to look back at pictures and think about Sunday School and different times and see that most of my friends who I grew up with are still faithful members of Christ UMC. In sixth grade, I took the wonderful confirmation class, and my class was the first to be confirmed in the “new sanctuary.”
What do you like best about Christ UMC?
In general, I just love feeling so comfortable with the church family. It feels like home to me. I’m so thankful for the relationships that this church has provided. I am in the youth choir, and our music ministries are wonderful. I also love that there are so many great places for the kids in our church. Growing up in this church, I had so many awesome Sunday School leaders, Vacation Bible School helpers, choir camp leaders and great examples to look up to. Now that I am in the youth group, I have many opportunities to help with the children in our church. It’s really great that no matter how old you are, there are opportunities for spiritual growth. I love it here!
What does “We Are About Relationships” mean to you?
This means that no matter what happens someone will be there for you. As a church we share a special bond that means the world to me. I feel as though we are just one HUGE family!
